Today's feature Perth Wildcats legend is Ricky Grace.

Ricky
"Amazing" Grace was selected in the 1988 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz in
the third round (67th overall) but failed to make the active roster of
an NBA team. Soon after, Grace was invited by then Perth Wildcats GM Cal
Bruton to play for the Australian club, where he played his entire
professional career (16 seasons), and captained the club from 2002/03
until his retirement in 2006. During his time with the club Grace played
an integral part in six grand finals appearances and four
championships, twice being award Grand Final MVP.
One of Ricky’s
best seasons was in 1991 when he averaged 22.2 points, 8.2 assists, 4.1
rebounds, 2.5 steals, 0.9 blocks, 1.8 triples while shooting almost 50%
from the field and 80% from the line.

Cal Bruton - Still dishing out assists
A good story about one of our Geelong Supercats Legends Cal Bruton and his involvement in the community and how he's helping out the future of the game.
Story by Brendan Parnell
Photos by Scott Soroka
Cal Bruton was a playground legend growing up in Queens New York, made his way to Australia in 1979 and then proceeded to revolutionise the development of Australia’s then fledgling National Basketball League (NBL).
Fittingly, in the very same year that the NBL has honoured him as an ambassador of its newly launched competition, Cal continues to dish out assists in the Canberra community by helping budding young indigenous talent Isaac Maher on his way to the Australian Under 14 Championships.
Lennock Motors Phillip, Cal’s employer, has this week joined him in sponsoring the ACT Under 14 Boys team and Isaac as they prepare for their trip to Darwin in late September to contest the Championships.
Lennock Motors has a strong ethic of contribution and a history of supporting local community, charities and sporting clubs. This current sponsorship sees a philosophical alignment between Cal’s commitment to youth basketball and Lennock’s increased focus in the field of youth wellbeing. Lennock Volkswagen and Dealer Principal Peter Munday have been working with the Canberra Hospital Foundation for 2 years to build a dedicated wing for the inpatient care of adolescent’s children which now has been established in the New Woman’s and Children’s Hospital and will open end of October 2013.

NBL legends Leroy Loggins and Cal Bruton honoured
Two of our featured NBL legends, Leroy Loggins and Cal Bruton have had the pre-season tournament trophy named in their honour.
Here's the story from Boti Nagy:
NBL legends Leroy Loggins and Cal Bruton to be honoured with Blitz "Cup" as league relaunches in Sydney
The 2013 Pre-season Blitz will feature all eight NBL teams converging on Sydney for the second and third rounds from September 20-22 after an initial round in Cairns, Wellington, Penrith and at Trinity Grammar in Sydney.
All games in the tournament will be for seven premiership points, with three points for the winning team and one point allocated for each of the four quarters won.
In the event a quarter is tied, both teams will receive half of a point and in any game which goes into overtime, there are no additional points.
The tournament will not have a final - the team with the most premiership points claiming the Loggins-Bruton Cup, named after the NBL's two Hall of Fame superstars.
"There is no better time to reconnect and recognise our legends and the names Loggins and Bruton were easy selections," the NBL's interim chief executive officer Steve Dunn said today.
"Both have a long history not only with the NBL but with basketball in Australia.
"As well as helping launch our pre-season, Leroy and Cal have also accepted ambassador roles for the new NBL and will work with our board and management to drive the league forward in a number of areas.
"We are excited to have them as part of the team and they will be valuable assets to assist us with our goals of expansion, connecting with the NBA and making other changes to make the entire game experience the most exciting it can be."
Expansion to regain a team from Brisbane, an inaugural club with the NBL in 1979 until its demise after 30 years, and where Loggins and Bruton were championship winners in 1985, is high on NBL Pty Ltd's agenda.

Geelong Supercats t-shirts
Gather round and let me tell you about a time when the NBL
was booming! So much so that back in the early 80’s you actually had to earn
your way in to the league, proving yourself against NBL teams in a gladiatorial-style
running of the gauntlet!
The (other) Geelong Cats were founded as part of the Victorian Basketball Association in 1978. After achieving championship success in that league in 1981, the club was pitted against four NBL clubs over two tournaments. After defeating all of these NBL teams the Supercats were accepted into the NBL for the 1982 season.
1991 was probably the finalhigh point for Geelong when they
finished third at the end of the regular season and boasted such guns as Shane Heal,
Terry Dozier, Bobby Locke, Vince Hinchen and John Dorge.
Geelong
its time to represent, show your support for our game, and remind everyone that
your town is not just about AFL! Like, share and shop!

With star players such as Cal Bruton and James Crawford on
the roster, the Cats recorded 13 straight victories and finished second overall
at the end of the regular season with 21 wins and 7 losses. The Cats would go on
to compete in the Grand Final in their first season, losing to the West
Adelaide Bearcats.
1991 was probably the final
Grew up in Geelong
but don’t like AFL? No problem, we’ve got you covered with our tribute to the

Foot Locker Elite Classic - Day 0
I say Day 0 because the tournament doesn't actually get underway until tomorrow so today was the day before day 1.
I was up at 4:40 in order to finish my packing and get to the airport in time for my 6:30 flight to Adelaide. When I checked in to Virgin Blue I noticed my seat number looked like it was down the back but for some reason I didn't think to change it. Having dated a Virgin Blue flight attendant and knowing a few others, I was aware that they put kids, babies, families down the back of the plane. I found myself sitting next to a mum with 2 young kids which wasn't too bad until 20 minutes or so before we landed and all hell broke loose. Note to self: make sure to sit down the front on the way home.
When we landed in Adelaide, I got a lift in to the city with Mark Bradtke, Deba George and a couple of the guys that were helping run the tournament. I caught up with JVG at the Stamford and met a few of the players who had already arrived and were waiting to check-in. More players and coaches arrived gradually throughout the day and the hotel was soon buzzing.
I helped collect bios on the players for One and had to call a few of the guys that hadn't arrived to fill theirs in over the phone. The first was my boy John Rillie and the next was Stephen Hoare who both fly in tomorrow and then one of the local Adelaide guys (who I caught up with at the Dome.)
In the afternoon we headed out to the Adelaide Dome to meet with the guys who are running the broadcast, while a number of the teams had shoot-arounds at another stadium. We had a meeting in the Sixers lounge surrounded by team pictures of all the Adelaide players throughout the years. Before we left we saw some of the sequences and imagining One are running during the event ... they look pretty good. Cal Bruton gave us a lift back in to town where we grabbed some dinner before the evenings events.
I had some running around to do before a meeting with all the players and coaches. It was essentially a welcome to everyone, a run through of what would be happening over the next week and what ECB's expectations were of those involved.
The day begins early tomorrow and after my 4:40 start this morning its a quiet night in for me and hopefully a good night sleep. Can't wait for the tournament to get started tomorrow!
