Steve Woodberry - Brisbane Bullets

Today's Brisbane Bullets Legend is Steve Woodberry. 

Steve Woodberry came to the NBL in ’95 after a successful college career at Kansas and was an instant favourite for MVP averaging 24ppg, 7rpg and 7apg for the Gold Coast. Woodberry joined Brisbane in ’96 and his best year was in ’99 when he put up almost 28ppg, 8rpg, 5apg and 2spg.

Simon Dwight - West Sydney Razorbacks

Let me tell you a story about the NBL player that turned down an offer to play in the NBA ...

Simon Dwight signed with the West Sydney Razorbacks in 1999 after he turned down an offer to play with the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA (yes, you read that right).

 

Simon led the league in blocks & blocks per game for 8 of 11 NBL seasons. Helping take West Sydney to the finals, 2004 was one of Simon’s best averaging 15 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks and 4 assists. Dwight's career was cut shot in 2005 due to major knee injuries.

Darryl McDonald - North Melbourne Giants

Today we feature one of the greatest point guards our league has ever seen.

Darryl McDonald made an immediate impact when he entered the league in ’94 leading the North Melbourne Giants to the title and being runner-up for the MVP (which he was again in ’97). D-Mac’s averages in ’94 were 19 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds and almost 5 steals! Despite entering the league at the age of 30, McDonald went on to play for 14 seasons in the NBL.

Calvin Talford - Hobart Devils

Today our feature Hobart Devils player is 1992 college dunk champ Calvin Talford.

Calvin Talford is the Chris Jent of the Hobart Devils in that he played just one season in the NBL (’94). He shares the record for most points in a debut scoring 50... points against the Brisbane Bullets (I was at that game and was blown away by the show he put on). He was one of the most exciting players in the league and averaged 22 points, 6 rebounds and shot over 52% from the field.

Ron "The Rat" Radliff - Brisbane Bullets

Today I'm repp'ing Ron "The Rat" Radliff.

Growing up everyone loved Leroy ... and sure, I did too ... but I like to be different, so my favourite Brisbane Bullets player was Ron.

In the years that I worked with the team my spot on the media bench was next to the coaching staff so I enjoyed chatting to Radliff during the games. A very laid back, quiet but friendly guy and a true legend of the NBL.

Hobart Tassie Devils t-shirts

This one is for the “veterans” amongst us as Tasmania hasn’t had a team in the league since 1996....

Back in the day, there was a time when the Hobart Tassie Devils attracted some great names from the US. Yes, I’m not quite sure how they did it either?!

John Rillie t-shirt - West Sydney Razorbacks

The Rillie tee has arrived!!

JR is most commonly remembered as a Croc but to me he was the heart and soul of the Razorbacks. Despite winning a championship in Adelaide, his time and input was limited by (Phil) Smyth and the move to West Sydney really saw him make his mark on the league. 

John Rillie teamed up with Derek Rucker for the West Sydney Razorbacks to form one of the best back courts of the 90s. JR led West Sydney to the finals in 2002 an...d 2004 but fell just short of the title both times. In 2002 he averaged 22 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists while hitting 3.5 triples a game at a 47% clip. In 2004 he averaged 19 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists while hitting 3.5 triples a game at a 46% clip as well as shooting 90% from the line.
