South East Melbourne Magic t-shirts

Gather round and let me tell you about a time when the NBL was booming! So much so, at one time there were five Victorian teams in the league!

The South East Melbourne Magic were formed in 1992 as the result of a merger between the South Melbourne Saints and the Eastside Spectres. The team’s home venue was the Rod Laver Arena which it shared with cross-town rivals the Melbourne Tigers and drew an NBL record 15,366 fans to a game between the two clubs in 1996.

Despite the Magic being successful on-court during its tenure in the league, making four Grand Final appearances and winning championships in 1992 and 1996, the club once again merged with a cross-town rival, the North Melbourne Giants for the 1998/99 season, forming the Victoria Titans.

Representing the Magic in our “Legends” series are Bruce Bolden, Tony Ronaldson, Sam Mackinnon, Darren Lucas, Mike Kelly and Rob Rose.

South East Melbourne fans, its time to represent and show your support for your once great team. Like, share and shop!

Scott Fisher - North Melbourne Giants

Today our feature North Melbourne Giants Legend is Scott Fisher.

When Scott Fisher first entered the NBL he played for North Melbourne and won the MVP in his second season ’89 and then again in ’92. “The Fish” led the Giants to the title in ’89 but his best statistical year was ’90 when he averaged over 32 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals while shooting 56% from the field and 89% from the line.

Here's our favourite Scott Fisher t-shirt:

Scott Fisher back in the day ... I do wonder just how many of these posters they sold?

Paul Maley - North Melbourne Giants

Today our feature North Melbourne Giant is "The Mailman" Paul Maley.

Paul Maley might be one of the most under-rated imports the NBL has seen and if it wasn’t for a back injury he may have dominated the ‘90s. Maley helped North Melbourne win the title in ’94 but his best season was ’91 when he averaged 28 points, 10 rebounds and 2 steals.

Here's our favourite Paul Maley t-shirt:

Chris Jent - North Melbourne Giants

Our feature North Melbourne Giant today is Chris Jent.

Chris Jent was only in the NBL for one season but is still remembered as one of the top imports to come to this country. Jent averaged 26 points including 3.5 triples, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. One of the highlights of his season was a 46 point outing against the Cannons.

Here's our favourite Chris Jent t-shirt:

Paul Rees - North Melbourne Giants

Our feature North Melbourne Giant today is the big man in the middle, Paul Rees.

Despite changing teams five times during his career, Paul Rees’ best years were with North Melbourne. Rees was the MVP of the Grand Final series when the Giants won the NBL title in ’94 and continued that strong play in to the ’95 season when he averaged almost 15 points, 8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks.

This was the first of four championship nets that Rees would cut down in his career

Darryl McDonald - North Melbourne Giants

Today we feature one of the greatest point guards our league has ever seen.

Darryl McDonald made an immediate impact when he entered the league in ’94 leading the North Melbourne Giants to the title and being runner-up for the MVP (which he was again in ’97). D-Mac’s averages in ’94 were 19 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds and almost 5 steals! Despite entering the league at the age of 30, McDonald went on to play for 14 seasons in the NBL.

North Melbourne Giants t-shirts

Gather round and let me tell you about a time when the NBL was booming! So much so, there were some cities that had more than one team!! Yes, it’s true!

For basketball fans in Melbourne, they once had a choice of teams to support. (Side note: after a bit of research, I found out that there was a time when there were 5 Victorian teams in the league at once!)

Back in the 80’s, despite the legendary father and son combination of Andrew & Lindsay Gaze, the Tigers weren’t a winning franchise. The team to beat on court were the North Melbourne Giants.

The Giants won the championship in ’89 and again in ’94 as well as making the grand final series on two other occasions. They would later merge with the South East Melbourne Magic and continued their winning ways on court before eventually folding in 2004.

Hate the Tigers? No problem, we’ve got you covered with our tribute to the once great North Melbourne Giants. Representing them in our “Legends” series is the starting five of Darryl McDonald, Chris Jent, Paul Maley, Scott Fisher and Paul Rees.

Melbourne, its time to represent, show your support for our game, and remind everyone that your town is not just about AFL! Like, share, shop and represent!
