Ray Allen owns game 2
Rajon Rondo may have finished off the game getting the win for the Celtics, but if it wasn't for Ray Allen's shooting in the first half, Boston never would have had a chance.
His 8 three-pointers set a new record for most threes in a finals game, surpassing Michael Jordan (6) and Scottie Pippen (7).
Ray's stat line for the night was great, but to put it in perspective, he had 27 of his 32 in the first half:

One HD ... I love you
Aussie NBA fans were in heaven on Friday night when One HD showed the first of its NBA: Hall of Fame Tribute games. They started with Chicago Bulls vs Utah Jazz in game 5 of the '97 NBA Finals Series ... better known as "the flu" game. FaceBook was full of comments from my basketball friends who were loving Michael Jordan's heroics.
Having been starved of NBA action over the last couple of years I am so looking forward to One HD showing at least three NBA games per week. The classic NBA games are a great way to get fans warmed up for the upcoming season.
If you don't know or somehow don't remember this game, check the footage below.
On a side note, I stumbled across a fashion article earlier. Could this be the only time the phrase "Jordan-esque" has ever been used in derogatory way?
"There were some truly hideous fashion faux pas. Silver sequinned 'pasties', for example, belong in a lap dancing club unless you subscribe to a Jordan-esque dress code."
Thankfully I know they are referring to the British model Jordan (Katie Price), rather than the G.O.A.T, otherwise it would be sacrilegious!

Basketball Hall of Fame
The big news in the basketball world was the induction of Michael Jordan in to the Basketball Hall of Fame. Joining the great one in this year's class were John Stockton, David Robinson, Jerry Sloan & Vivian Stringer.
The crew over at Dime spent much of the weekend talking about the entrants and the ceremony. Most of the articles are 2 or 3 pages deep now.
John Rillie was one of the few that wasn't so focused on MJ, instead talking about his fellow Gonzaga, alumni John Stockton. Click here to read his thoughts about one of the best point guards to ever play the game.

Michael Jordan ... the early years
Thanks to DJ Rod for bringing this article about Michael Jordan to my attention. Its a good read if you've got a few minutes and gives you an idea about the work ethic that the great one had, even in his early years. The dedication, commitment and focus reminds me of the article I posted a few months back about Ray Allen and his routine excellence. WILMINGTON -- Ruby Sutton has a distinct pet peeve when it comes to the subject of her former pupil, Michael Jordan: the oft-told story of how he was “cut” from the Laney High varsity basketball team as a sophomore, spurring him to greatness.
“Back then, (most) 10th-graders played JV; that's just the way it was. Nobody ever ‘cut' Michael Jordan,” Sutton, who still teaches physical education, said this month, shaking her head as she retold the story for at least the 100th time.
“Him not making the varsity that year was not his motivator – he was motivated well before that. He just always wanted to be the best.”

A street art tribute to Michael Jordan made out of 19,000 Gatorade bottles, including the new Gatorade Limited Edition Jordan Series, glows on a basketball court Monday on Chicago's South Side. Local Jordan fans and longtime Jordan teammate Scottie Pippen helped construct the mosaic, which Gatorade organized as a way to celebrate Jordan's Hall of Fame career.
Yes, its a pretty slow time for NBA news, but again, thanks to the crew at Ball Don't Lie, the guys at The Basketball Jones teach you how to keep basketball in your life. Pretty funny stuff for those of us who LOVE the game.

R.I.P the other MJ
"I read the news today oh boy ... "
Growing up in the late 80's early 90's, there were two "MJ's". If you were a basketball fan, the initials corresponded to Michael Jordan, if you weren't ... it was Michael Jackson.
Since the tragic news yesterday about the passing of Michael Jackson, rightfully so there have been tributes everywhere.
In basketball terms, Michael Jackson was the Jordan of the music world. (Side note: this would probably mean that Elvis was Wilt Chamberlain and the 60's Celtics were The Beatles.)
In '91 at the height of both their powers, the two MJ's combined in the video "Jam". It's still one of my favourite Michael Jackson songs and watching the video for the first time in ages gives me goosebumps.
Since the extended "official" video is un-embeddable, click here to see the full version and watch Jordan at his most awkward (in the last 2 minutes).

NBA All Star Game 1992
One of my friends gave me a DVD a while ago with some basketball games on it. One of them was one I played in a few years ago but he didn't tell me that on there was also the NBA All Star game from 1992. That's almost 17 years ago now but if you were a fan of the NBA in the 90's the starting line-ups were as good as it gets:
EAST
Isiah Thomas
Michael Jordan
Scottie Pippen
Charles Barkley
Patrick Ewing
WEST
Magic Johnson
Clyde Drexler
Chris Mullin
Karl Malone
David Robinson
The game itself ended up being a blowout with the West shooting the lights out and dominating the game 153 - 113. Still, it was still great to see some of the best players ever putting on a show. Having seen the end of their careers, I had almost forgotten just how good many of these players were. How athletic and dangerous players like Drexler, Pippen and Barkley were ... and Mutumbo as a rookie (he's now 42)!
Here are some of the numbers from the game:
Magic (was MVP) 25 points, 9 assists, 5 boards
Drexler 22 points, 9 boards, 6 assists
Tim Hardaway 14 points, 7 assists
Jordan 18 points, 5 assists

Michael Jordan vs. Magic Johnson on Pay-Per-View
How good would this one-on-one match up below have been? Click on the title to read the rest of the article. It mentions a match up between Shaq and Hakeem which I remember hearing all about at the time. I remember the "under-card" sounding great too with some awesome point guard match ups.

If you paid $59.99 to watch WWE Backlash just so that you could see The Undertaker take on Kane for a 47th time, there’s no doubt in my mind that you would have paid for this.
Supposedly, Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson had all but signed a contract to play one-on-one on Pay-Per-View at some time in 1989-90. Magic was convinced that he had some tricks up his sleeve that would have ensured victory over MJ. But the game never happened and thus neither one of these guys can reap the millions in DVD sales that would have undoubtedly ensued. Maybe if Don King had been involved it would have worked out."
