Boomers finish tenth at World Champs

If you haven't been watching the World Championships, you're not alone. The time difference between us and Turkey plus the coverage only being on Foxtel, means that many Aussies haven't been following the tournament to closely. I am one of those, but have stayed up to date with the results on Twitter and Dime magazine. Full credit to guys like Mookie from A Stern Warning and DJ Rod for staying up till all hours to support the Boomers.

BOOMERS FINISH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH TOP TEN PLACING

Despite suffering the disappointment of being eliminated from the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey at the Eight-Final Round stage, the Golden Star Boomers Australian men’s national basketball team have finished the tournament with a top ten placing, FIBA has announced.

The Eight-Final Round of the 2010 FIBA World Championship came to a close on Tuesday night and, teams do not play classification games once eliminated from the tournament, the teams that did not advance to the Quarter-Finals have now been ranked by FIBA to provide a final placing.

Australia, who are currently ranked 11th in the world by FIBA, finished the tournament in 10th place, ahead of world basketball superpowers such as Greece, France and Croatia.

During the course of their world titles campaign they recorded wins over Jordan, Germany and Angola. They lost games to Slovenia, Argentina and also Serbia. The Serbians subsequently have advanced to the top four Semi Finals overnight by scoring an upset 92-89 victory over reigning world champions Spain, while Argentina have also advanced to the top-eight Quarter Finals and will play Lithuania tomorrow morning for a Semi Final berth.

Michael Jordan ... the early years

Thanks to DJ Rod for bringing this article about Michael Jordan to my attention. Its a good read if you've got a few minutes and gives you an idea about the work ethic that the great one had, even in his early years. The dedication, commitment and focus reminds me of the article I posted a few months back about Ray Allen and his routine excellence. I've mentioned it before ... success leaves clues.

You don't cut Michael - CharlotteObserver.com

WILMINGTON -- Ruby Sutton has a distinct pet peeve when it comes to the subject of her former pupil, Michael Jordan: the oft-told story of how he was “cut” from the Laney High varsity basketball team as a sophomore, spurring him to greatness.

“Back then, (most) 10th-graders played JV; that's just the way it was. Nobody ever ‘cut' Michael Jordan,” Sutton, who still teaches physical education, said this month, shaking her head as she retold the story for at least the 100th time.

“Him not making the varsity that year was not his motivator – he was motivated well before that. He just always wanted to be the best.”

The Basketball Jones

A few months back John Rillie was talking up coming after The Basketball Jones in the world of podcasting. Today I stumbled across some funny stuff from the guys at TBJ with a "behind the scenes" video of how they prepare for their show.

DJ Rod, JR ... time to step up to the plate and give us a behind the scenes look at The OT. Show us the "card table", show us the "dodgy american accent chick" (no offence Heidi) and whatever else goes on up there in far north Queensland.

I think the challenge has been laid down ... and I'm hoping its better than the rubbish Aaron Bruce HORSE challenge. Aaron, where you at? One shot and you're done? Kids not in the same league anyway, who is he to challenge JR?? Rookie.

Ball Don't Lie - NBA - Yahoo! Sports

Video: Behind-the-scenes of 'The Basketball Jones'

By J.E. Skeets

We get a lot of email at The Basketball Jones asking how Tas and I prepare for the show. (That's a complete lie.) Do we watch the games together? (Rarely.) Do we take notes? (Um, have you actually seen the podcast?) Are our heads buried in laptops, tweeting and live blogging? (Yes ... and yes.)

So, to ignore the parentheses and really answer your questions, we produced a short behind-the-scenes video, inviting you in to watch a game with us. Please, keep your shoes on.

Chris Mullin and some more Corey Williams

I was at the pub last night playing poker so I only got to see parts of the Crocs series-tying win against the Dragons. It was great to see that they fought back from a 3/4 deficit to force the series in to a game 3 decider in Melbourne.

With only 2 games in the NBA, its a rather slow day on the basketball front so I was checking out some sites that I don't look at as regularly. The main one today is Bounce which seems to be an affiliate/off-shoot of Dime (that I refer to regularly). One of the articles on there was about the "leader of Croc Nation", Corey Williams, click here to check out what they had to say about the NY playground legend doing his thing down under. Good to see The OT's DJ Rod in the comments!

The main story tho that I loved seeing on there was a feature on one of the greatest basketball shooting players of all time and one of my favourites, Chris Mullin. For those youngsters that only know him as the GM of the Golden State Warriors, check out the article below (click on the title to read the full story) to learn more about his life as a player, its a story of hard work and persistence. Watching Mully when he had it going was a thing of beauty ...

Speaking of the NBL, check out the Sports Illustrated cover in the article that has a college pic of Sydney Kings legend Dwayne McClain.

The Playground Gave Us “Mo”, aka Chris Mullin | Streetball, Sneakers, Bobbito, Nike Air Force, Jordans

By Ali

Christopher Paul Mullin was a simple, neighborhood guy from Troy Avenue in the Flatlands section of Brooklyn. The love affair with hoops was a multi-generational thing that began in the driveway of the family’s small row house.

His father Rod played street ball with Doug Moe before Moe would go on to star at the University of North Carolina in the late ’50s. His older brother Roddy played at Siena, where he was the team captain as a senior. Younger brothers John and Terence would later ball at Bridgeport and St. John’s, respectively.

Known to his family and around the hood as “Mo”, Mullin was the ultimate playground fixture and gym rat. Showing up for the run was only part of his childhood mission. The other component was hours of repetitive work on movement, dribbling and shooting the rock from an assortment of angles.

Perfect basketball shooting form ... no comment on the facial expression tho ...
