Kirk Penney & Corey Williams

With the NBL season long finished, its been ages since I've been able to write anything about one of our favourite shooters from last season, Kirk Penney. This article was on the NBL website last week and I just had to post it here. When you look at the names missing from the New Zealand team, that indeed must be a young inexperienced squad they're running with. Look for our man Kirk to get plenty of buckets with many of the other scoring options not in action.

Breakers star Kirk Penney says he is enjoying being the New Zealand Tall Blacks captain and mentoring the younger players on the Europe tour.

Penney is leading the young side in its current tour of Europe, without stalwarts Sean Marks, Pero Cameron, Dillon Boucher, Paul Henare and Phill Jones.

'I'm just hoping that the boys can understand what it is to be part of the Tall Blacks culture that we have established over the last ten years that I've been a part of.'


Also, thanks to John Rillie for pointing it out, there was a good article on Corey "Homicide" Williams on Slam Online. The announcement came last week that Corey has re-signed with the Townsville Crocodiles which is great to see as he's a fan favourite and the type of personality the league needs right now.

My question from the article below tho ... if Corey is shooting 500 jumpers per day, he's either got to start shooting 1000 or instead start counting his makes rather than his takes (quick basketball shooting tip). Click on the title below to read the full story.

Homicide wasn’t one of those child prodigies that took the courts seriously as a youth. Quite the opposite; Hom was somewhat of a late-bloomer, and didn’t get serious about hoops till he was about 13. Even then, the Bronx native’s game didn’t take flight immediately. Nope. Nobody was hyping him as the next great thing from New York—that title was left to the likes of Lenny Cooke and Stephon Marbury. When he was in high school (Rice) and college (Alabama State), and not receiving the attention he thought he deserved, Williams may have regretted the late start, and resented the scouts and critics for overlooking his game. Now, nearly two decades since his love of the game developed, Hom has put it all in perspective.

“Being overlooked, starting late, all of that, that why I play with a chip on my shoulder,” says Williams. “I felt jaded. I thought coaches couldn’t and didn’t want to help me. All of that built up inside of me. So now when I come at you, I come full steam, with all of that pushing me forward.”

That “steam” is the same force that drives Corey to trek up mountains, and work out for hours on end. If he isn’t taking 500 jumpers, Homicide is working on his handle or is teaming up with dudes on the court, sweating to better his pick-and-roll offense. The first place that the effort and drive paid off was on some of the hallowed parks dotting the five boroughs of New York City.

Ron Artest & Corey Williams

Having seen a bit of NBA coverage lately on One HD (I love you!), I noticed something interesting when seeing highlights of the Houston Rockets. Is it just me or is Ron Artest looking more and more like Corey "Homicide" Williams every day??

The two have had their battles on the NY playgrounds in the summer so I'm guessing they're not best of friends ... but watching footage of Crazy Ron lately, on-court he reminds me of Homicide. Whether its Artest and his new haircuts, they've both spent many hours in the weights room so their builds are fairly similar, the way they move and handle the ball on court or just their general swagger, I think there are definite similarities.

Often people who are so similar tend to clash ... could I be on to something? I think JR or DJ Rod would be the best people to ask. Well guys, leave me a comment and let me know what you think?

Jilted Homicide fires for team after starting snub

Make no bones about it, Corey Williams wants his starting spot back.

Furious after being demoted to the bench for the Crocodiles' clash with Wollongong on Saturday, the star point guard has declared his stint on the sideline will be a short one.

Williams, John Rillie and Russell Hinder were the casualties of Townsville's horrid run of form over the past month, making way for a new-look starting team.

The trio looked on as Kelvin Robertson, Cam Tovey, Brad Williamson, Rosell Ellis and Daniel Egan got the Crocs off to a dream start and laid the foundation for the win.

But Williams, Rillie and Hinder played their part, coming on with a spark in the first term, with Williams' seven straight points helping the Crocs to a 36-19 quarter-time lead.

It was just the third time Townsville have led at the first break in 12 games.

The 31-year-old American admitted being told by coach Trevor Gleeson pre-game he would not start had put plenty of fire in his belly.

'Of course, that p***** me off, I don't want to come off no bench,' Williams said.

'But ultimately that wasn't my decision ... so as long as I came out and got my minutes and do what I do, I ain't got no problem with that.

'But I was real p***** off with that, but there ain't nothing I could do about that.'

Kirk Penney - Shooter of the Month for October

For his terrific start to the NBL season, our inaugural Shooter of the Month award goes to NZ Breakers shooting guard, Kirk Penney. Kirk has been on fire over the first 7 rounds of the season leading the league in scoring with 26.7ppg over 4ppg more than Corey “Homicide” Williams in second place. He’s shooting a red hot 49.5% from the field (impressive for a shooting guard) and 88% from the line. He had a career high 41 points back on September 18 in a game against the Woollongong Hawks. Kirk shot a sizzling 16 of 22 from the field including 6 of 10 from downtown.

Hawks had a massive last quarter (35 - 18) in this come from behind win. Hawks won the boards 48 - 36 and shot better from downtown (48%) than they did from the field (47%)

Breakers came from behind in the 4th quarter to get the win. They shot well from downtown, no surprise ... and made almost twice as many free-throws as the Wildcats. Redhage was contained (for him) and Luke Kendall had 9 points but 6 costly turnovers.

Breakers get their first real win on the road (that one against the Blaze didn't really count). The Crocs knew they had to stop CJ Bruton but they couldn't get it done.

No, this isn't a typo, the two teams met each other last Wednesday in the Gong and then again in Cairns on Saturday night. Surprisingly, the Taipans took out both games. Possibly the worst free-throw shooting game you'll see, the teams combined for a horrible 31/57 (54%) from the stripe. The Taipans shot just 4 of 20 from downtown.

Tigers 123 Blaze 111

For the Tigers:

Sam Mac showed that he still has it and was probably fired up for the re-match with old foe Shane Heal. Casey Frank 4 points, 6 boards ... not nearly good enough for a starting import.

Dragons 96 Spirit 87

For the Dragons:

Adam Gibson 9 points, 6 boards, 5 assists

For the Spirit:

Julian Khazzouh 19 points, 14 boards, 4 blocks, 4 steals

It was a BLOCK party at Hisense with 16 in total for the game. Youngster Julian Khazzouh had an outstanding line and is having a great year so far! Close for most of the game, Dragons stepped it up in the 4th (26 - 15) to get the win.

36ers 108 Spirit 76

For the 36ers:

Luke Schenscher 19 points, 18 boards, 3 blocks
Adam Ballinger 24 points, 8 boards
Brad Davidson 14 points, 8 boards, 5 assists

For the Spirit:

Things started well for the Spirit but they were outscored 54 - 25 in the second half and shot just 24% from the field in that time. Playing the Dragons the night before they look to have hit a wall ... hard. Tough weekend for import Derrick Low shooting just 7 of 29 (24%) over the two games. John Rillie snubbed Schenscher when he got player of the week because his team didn't win but has to give him a start in his team of the week this time!

At the end of round 7 in the NBL the Dragons are out in front 8 wins from 10 including 6 in a row now. The Breakers are 2nd with 7 wins and 3 in a row. Blaze still at the bottom with 10 losses in a row ... hopefully that becomes 11 tomorrow night when the Crocs come to town.

In news just to hand, Sam Mackinnon was named player of the week for his almost triple-double against Shane Heal and the Blaze. Ex-Bullet Sam Mackinnon was in vintage form, dominating the game like it was 2007!!

Now to the Vlade Divac Flops of the week ... again there are two. From penthouse to doghouse, one time Shooter of the Week Derrick Low gets the nod this week for his dismal shooting display (24% over 2 games). The other is one of last week's recipients ... Cameron Tovey for shooting 1 of 4 from the line. Sure he's not alone in missing free-throws but when you have only hit 5 of your last 20 attempts from the line we will name and shame you!

Shooter of the Week goes to Gary Boodnikoff (pictured below) of the Cairns Taipans for his 23 points in just 25 minutes off the bench in their first game against the Hawks. He shot 7 off 11 from the field including 6 of 9 from downtown. He scored 11 points in the final quarter in a shooting duel with Glenn Saville.

Around the league

The underground media in the NBL continues to do a good job covering the league and keeping fans up to date. John Rillie and DJ Rod have just released the latest edition of the OT while Andrew Gaze and Mark Bradtke are up to Episode 7 of Gaze TV.

The OT's special guest this week is Corey "Homicide" Williams who is hilarious as always. He certainly lacks no confidence and his street-ball stories alone make this episode worth listening to. Yours truly also gets a mention right at the end.

Gaze TV is good also. Drewey's interview with Russell Hinder after the Spirit game is hilarious. Russell is in fine form as usual and I cracked up when he dropped the "its what I do" comment. Its good to see the boys are now filming indoors rather than in the car park outside Tigers training facilities ... next thing they need is a tripod. The OT has its "dodgy accent girl" announcer, Gaze TV has a dodgy camera guy with a shaky hand! Also, still no mention by them about the OT.

Another big/busy weekend (fantasy draft Friday night, buck's day/night on Saturday, cash poker game all day Sunday) so I'm only catching up on all things NBL today.

Free-throw expert John Rillie was 0 of 2 ... very un-Rillie like ... but he had 18 points (his season high) so we'll not focus on the negative.

At the end of round 6 in the NBL the Dragons are in first spot with 7 wins 2 losses followed by the Breakers with 5 wins 2 losses. Everyone's pick for the title, the Melbourne Tigers are currently 3rd with 5 wins 3 losses. The current streaks in the league ... Dragons have won 5 in a row, Perth 3 ... 36ers have lost 5 in a row and obviously the Blaze 9.

Before we get to our Shooter of the Week, we're going to name and shame the Vlade Divac Flops of the Week. There are two recipients this week, Cameron Tovey for shooting 2 of 8 from the line TWICE in one week and "shooter" Mat Campbell for going 1 of 11 from the field against the Spirit.

Now, Shooter of the Week was close to going to bigman Russell Hinder for shooting a surprising 5 of 7 from downtown but the winner this week is Breakers forward Oscar Forman (below). Forman gets the nod mainly for his 6 of 8 from downtown against the Blaze but he also had 4 triples against the Taipans earlier in the week.

NBL wrap - round 5

I know I seemingly went missing for a few days ... 4 or 5 days without posting, what's going on?? Ha ha ha, nothing serious, honestly. I had a massive weekend and just haven't had a chance. The weekend started on Thursday night with my regular APL poker game, Friday night I got an invite to a corporate at the QLD Roar, Saturday night I had a friend's 30th and then Sunday was spent playing in a State poker tournament.

Anyway, down to business and round 5 of the NBL season ...

It really looks like the Hawks just failed to show up for this game. Glen Saville, Kavossy Franklin and Cameron Tragardh combined shot just 9 of 29 from the field.

NZ Breakers 120 Gold Coast Blaze 108

Not too much D played in this one with both teams shooting around 50% from the field. The game was close for most of it but NZ pulled away when it mattered.

Welcome back Kavossy! After a very slow start this is the sort of output the Hawks expect from him. Balanced performance from the Hawks, Adelaide started strongly but couldn't finish it off. Brett Maher continues to struggle for Adelaide ... 2 of 10 from the field.

South Dragons 106 Sydney Spirit 101

For the Dragons:

Sydney charged home in this one (outscoring the Dragons 23 - 14 in the final quarter) but it was too little too late.

13 days (the break between games that the Crocs had) is a long time in sport. 13 days ago they beat Perth by 17 and now they lose by 14. EIGHT Wildcats scored in double figures in a very balanced team performance. Apparently Perth's physical style of play knocked the Crocs off their game.

For the Dragons:

Massive game from Joe Ingles, John Rillie said in his latest podcast that the game would be decided by the match up of Joe and Rod Gizzard. Joe wins hands down and so do the Dragons. Tigers shot just 32% from the field (without Anstey, they shot just 27%) and 17% from downtown. Its disappointing that this wasn't closer because there was a fantastic crowd of over 9300 on hand to see the local derby.

Cairns Taipans 102 Gold Coast Blaze 87

For Cairns:

Cairns were too good and the Blaze continue to stink it up (0 of 7 so far this season) ... enough said.

For his outstanding performance in what should have been the game of the round, Joe Ingles was yesterday named player of the week.

For raining in 7 triples, our Shooter of the Week award goes to Derrick Low (below) from the Spirit. Considering no one is going to their games, I wasn't surprised that I couldn't find any action shots of him in the NBL. Nice shooting form in this photo tho.

There were 3 games over the weekend in the NBL:

• Wildcats 94 Blaze 80
• Spirit 112 Sixers 105
• Crocodiles 100 Taipans 96

The "highlight" of the first game was the explosion by Blaze coach Brendan Joyce at one of the WA reporters in the press conference. Having run the press conference for the Bullets for the last 5 years I've seen plenty ... but thankfully nothing that fiery. On the court, a balanced Perth team took care of business while Shane Heal was the stand-out for the Blaze with 28 points including 5 triples.

Game 2, and its good to see the Sydney Spirit get their first win under the new name. Derrick Low and Julian Kazzouh led the way with 26 points, 7 assists and 16 points, 11 boards respectively. Jacob Holmes had one of those nights for the Sixers with 27 points on 9 of 13 shooting (including 4 triples) and 10 boards. Jacob is one of the uglier (read: flattest) shooters in the league in my opinion but when its on, its on. Luke Schencher also chipped in with 19 points (8 of 11 shooting), 6 boards and Adam Ballinger and 18 points, 9 boards.

In the highly-anticipated clash of the far north Queensland teams, the Crocs came from behind to knock off the previously undefeated Taipans. Homicide Williams (pictured below) again led the Crocs with 31 points on 10 of 15 "shooting" (we all know he got those buckets going to the hole), 9 boards and 3 steals. For the Taipans, Blacky was red hot with 30 points on 10 of 13 shooting (including 6 triples). Cattalini had 18 points, 16 board and 7 turnovers with 0 assists, 0 assists, 0 steals (who is he, Eddy Curry? Zach Randolph?). Looking at the boxscore, the Taipans shot well but committed too many fouls and turnovers.

Night of upsets in the NBL

It was a night of upsets in the NBL ... and I'm not just talking about basketball fans that didn't get to see either of the games! Firstly, the Crocs bounce back from their slow start in Adelaide to knock off the Dragons in Melbourne but the major upset for the night was the NZ Breakers beating the much-talked about Melbourne Tigers.

Firstly the Crocs - Dragons game (91 - 89). Looking at the numbers, its unfortunate my boy JR failed to bounce back (from an ordinary night in Adelaide) and finished with just 5 points on 2 of 10 shooting. Trying too hard John, need some home cooking? Homicide Williams top scored with 28 points (as well as 12 boards) and ex-Bullet Brad Williamson (holder of the worst nickname in the NBL, B-Rad ... I hate it) came good after a shaky start in his first game for the Crocs with 16 points (including 4 triples).

It looks like the Crocs caught the Dragons on a bad night with star import Cortez Groves fouling out with just 2 points and Joe Ingles (nickname I heard last night, Jingles ... don't mind it) shooting just 2 of 13 from the field. Mark Worthington was good with 20 points and 12 boards while another ex-Bullet Adam Gibson had 13 points, 8 boards, 3 assists and 0 turnovers. Can the Dragons 36% shooting be credited to pressure defence from the Crocs? We'll have to wait till we hear more ...

Now ... to the big upset, Breakers - Tigers (120 - 111). In a much higher scoring and free-flowing game, the Breakers are the first to claim the scalp of the NBL defending champs. In a balanced performance from the Kiwis, CJ Bruton (6 of 12 from downtown), Ronaldson (4 of 4 from downtown) and Forman (7 of 10 from downtown) all had 23 points while player of the week Kirk Penney chipped in with 20. The Breakers shot an outstanding 54% from deep compared to just 26% by the Tigers.

It wasn't that the Tigers played badly ... Anstey had 32 points and 9 boards, Ebi had 21 and Barlow had 17. They just couldn't stop the outside shooting of the Breakers and maybe had the tempo and style of play dicated to them, which you don't want NZ to do when they're hitting their shots and on their home floor.

From a personal point of view, with strong games from CJ, Gibbo and Williamson, its great to see the (ex) Bullets back-court doing so well.
